Food Photography Client Brief
I met Karen, the founder of Maison Organic, in London by chance, and when she saw my work she thought I was a good fit for her brand. It all started with a chat in person followed by a short exchange of emails. The brief was to create wonderful images that draw the viewers in and make them hungry.
La Maison Organic focuses on healthy, vegetarian products that are homemade (just like grandmothers used to make). Karen is Colombian and her product range includes delicious recipes from her heritage such as chimichurri and ogaho. The images she wanted had to reflect the brands identity: organic, natural, green and vibrant.
The first food photography brief was all about product photography, photographing her wide range of organic jams, preserves and pickled vegetables both for social media and for ecommerce. Packshot photography and recipe photography was the main goal and food was the focus.
Why Hire an Ecommerce Photographer in London?
It can be quite challenging for your brand to be noticed online, as people are overwhelmed with the amount of products that pop up in their faces every day. That’s why the main starting point is to have strong, bold images that stop people in their tracks.
The Photoshoot Process: From Idea to Results
Like many food photoshoots it all starts with the creation of a mood board. Karen and I researched ideas and inspirational images, then created a list of pictures with structured photoshoot timeline to make sure we got the most out of the session. The first list was divided into two main sections: packshot photography and recipe photography.
When I’m shooting food photography on location in London, I always work tethered. The benefit of this is that the photos pop up on a big screen as we shoot, so you can see exactly what’s happening in real time. It makes the whole process collaborative — if something needs tweaking, whether it’s the lighting, focus, composition, or colour, we can adjust it there and then. No surprises, just great results.
I generally tend to shoot with studio lighting and reflectors for commercial photography, the main reason for this is because I am looking for consistency. The options are natural light or studio light… and we all know we can’t rely on the weather in the UK! :)
The Importance of Prop Styling in Food Photography
Karen is an experienced chef and cooks all the dishes herself, I helped with the food styling, props styling and the final overall image composition. I own a small photography props collection, which includes: backdrops, plates, wooden boards, cutlery, table cloths and glasses that can be used for any photoshoot.
I have worked with Maison Organic since 2022 and it is great to see the amazing results and growth we have achieved together.
